The Stats

For many individuals and couples, the road to conception isn’t as straightforward as they hoped. In Canada, roughly 1 in 6 couples experience some form of fertility difficulty. While technologies like IVF and IUI have opened new doors, their success depends on many factors such as hormone balance, egg and sperm health, age, and uterine receptivity.

Acupuncture offers a complementary way to nurture reproductive health — improving circulation, calming stress, and supporting hormonal communication between the brain and the reproductive organs. By working alongside modern fertility care, acupuncture can help create the best possible environment for conception.

How Acupuncture Supports Fertility

Enhanced Blood Flow
Improves circulation to the uterus supporting optimal conditions for follicular development and implantation. Also supports sperm quality through improved testicular blood flow.

Supports Hormonal Balance
Influences the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis to regulate key fertility hormones, supporting regular ovulation and menstrual cycles.

Improves Egg & Sperm Quality
Research suggests acupuncture may enhance egg and sperm quality through improved microcirculation, hormonal regulation, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress.

Reduces Stress & Promotes Relaxation
Lowers stress hormones and calms the nervous system — creating a more balanced environment for conception. IVF can be emotionally challenging. A 2025 study in Fertility and Sterility Reports found that IVF patients who tried acupuncture felt calmer and more supported during treatment.

Integrates with IVF & IUI Care
Complements medical fertility treatments by improving uterine receptivity and promoting relaxation before and after embryo transfer.

Research on Fertility Acupuncture

Emerging research continues to explore how acupuncture can support individuals experiencing fertility challenges. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that acupuncture, especially when integrated with treatments like IVF or IUI, may improve pregnancy and live-birth rates. While the exact biological mechanisms are still being studied, evidence points to acupuncture’s role in improving blood flow, regulating hormones, and reducing stress — all key factors in reproductive success.

Acupuncture for Male Fertility A 2022 literature review found that acupuncture may support sperm count, motility and morphology by improving hormonal regulation, blood flow and reducing oxidative stress. While more research is needed, these findings support the use of acupuncture as a valuable complement to male fertility care.

Chinese Herbal Medicine & Fertility A 2015 meta-analysis published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine reviewed 40 clinical trials involving more than 4,000 women. The findings showed that those receiving individualized Chinese herbal medicine were were nearly twice as likely to conceive as those using fertility drugs alone. Improvements were also seen in ovulation, uterine lining, and cycle regularity. While more research is needed, these results suggest that Chinese herbal medicine may be a valuable, integrative option for supporting fertility. Source: Ried K, Stuart K. Chinese Medicine & IVF A 2015 study published in Reproductive Biomedicine Online compared IVF outcomes among women who received: IVF alone, IVF with one acupuncture session on transfer day, and IVF combined with Whole Systems Traditional Chinese Medicine (WS-TCM)—a comprehensive approach including regular acupuncture, herbal support, and lifestyle guidance. Results showed live birth rates of 48.2% (IVF only), 50.8% (single acupuncture), and 61.3% (WS-TCM). The authors suggested that ongoing, multi-modal support may enhance IVF outcomes. Acupuncture for Embryo Transfer A 2002 study published in Fertility and Sterility found that women who received acupuncture 25 minutes before and after embryo transfer had a 42.5% pregnancy rate, compared to 26.3% without acupuncture. The authors suggested this may relate to improved uterine blood flow and reduced stress. While these findings are encouraging, larger trials are still needed.Nonetheless, many patients find that acupuncture provides a sense of calm and support during the IVF process, helping to reduce stress and promote overall wellbeing. The Calgary Fertility Acupuncture Group is a team of experienced acupuncturists providing on-site acupuncture treatments at Regional Fertility Program in Calgary. Our role is to support patients on embryo transfer (ET) day with acupuncture before and after transfer, helping to:

  • Optimize uterine blood flow

  • Support implantation

  • Reduce stress and anxiety during this milestone moment

More and more people are choosing to integrate acupuncture into their IVF care, and research suggests that transfer-day treatments may help improve pregnancy and live-birth outcomes when used as part of a comprehensive fertility plan.
